My art is primarily visual, but with a strong tactile element: texture, surface - noise. The beauty of noise is its suggestivity; a primordial chaos that momentarily, from a certain angle, evokes a resemblance, which morphs into something else as you shift your perspective. It functions as a ground, as the quantum foam that coalesce into form, or the chaos which form erupts into. Almost as an obsession have I searched for ways to make the noise ever more dense, ever more intense. At first it was just painterly flurry, and then impasto explosions, to proceed further into the third dimension with sculptural material. The piece I am currently working on, MNNCA, uses a thick nappy rug as receiving surface, which when modeling paste and paint is worked into it becomes a complex fractal surface, providing a sea of sensory overload as a spawning pool of objects, often found by free association from its evocations.
My objects have transitioned from being representationally painted on canvas into sculpted and assembled readymades, using impasto paint to blend into a complete illusory image, and to have the noise creep up upon these as well. Inspiration-wise I draw technique and form from post-modernists like Rauschenberg, painterly style from modernists such as Cézanne and Ernst, while sentiment and aesthetic has come to align with pre-modernistic spiritual-romantic painters like Bosch and Blake. My subject matter is plural and open-ended, but can be summarised under the rubrics TRANSCENDENCE and APOCALYPSE.
